How to Read More Books in a Year

Read this blog post to find out how to make reading so enjoyable that you make time for it. Here are 6 ways to read more books in one year.

Set a Daily Habit

This could be something as small as 20 minutes a day or one chapter a day. Any reading is better than no reading at all. To keep this habit in your mind, set a book on your nightstand or somewhere easy to see and grab.

You can habit stack as well! Habit stacking is taking advantage of a habit you already have and adding a habit you want to have. To do this, you can make two lists. One list of habits you already have and another list of habits you want to add. Now pair these habits together in a way that makes sense. Some examples of habit stacking are “After I brush my teeth, I will do a quick morning/night prayer.” Or “While my tea is brewing, I will pack my bag for the day.”

Audiobooks

I don’t personally use audiobooks PURELY because I like to make up voices for characters in my head. Now, if I’m reading a book with no characters, I find audiobooks very useful! This can kinda help with habit stacking. You can listen to audiobooks while working out or doing chores. Listening to audiobooks makes it so easy to multitask! I know sometimes people can get a headache while reading, or they want to read on a road trip, but reading in the car makes them feel sick. I totally get that feeling! That’s why I think audiobooks are so helpful.

Carry a Book

You know, when you're on a bus or anywhere in public, really just sitting there awkwardly? You could be waiting for a friend or for an event to start. Well, instead of immediately grabbing your phone to entertain yourself, how about you grab your book instead! Or if you have an e-reader, you can use that instead. Even if it’s just a two-minute wait again, a little reading is better than no reading. Trust me, you look way more mysterious and intelligent.

Quit Books You Don’t Enjoy

Life is too short to waste your time on boring books! Spend time reading things you actually want to. No one is forcing you to read that book you really aren’t interested in. Where’s the fun in that? You’ll get yourself in a reading slump all over again. If you don't DNF that book, you’ll never finish it. I promise you’ll just keep procrastinating, and it will never get finished. That holds you back from reading more books. Instead of that, try the 50-page rule. Give the book 50 pages to catch your interest. If it’s not your thing, forget about it!

Remove Distractions

Start by identifying the main distraction. What’s hindering you from reading more often? What are you choosing to focus on rather than reading? Is it more important than reading? Let’s be honest, probably not. Turn do not disturb on and silence notifications while you’re reading. That way, you don’t get distracted, and it doesn’t ruin the visuals in your mind.

Maybe it’s not your phone that’s the problem, maybe it’s just hard to focus. That could be the result of hunger, stress, or fatigue. Take a nap! Eat a snack! You do have time. Create a cozy reading space that doesn’t make you bored. Don’t be afraid to take breaks!

Join a Reading Challenge

Reading challenges build discipline, and it feels so rewarding when you’re finished! Very encouraging to join another one, or maybe keep reading. Depending on what challenge you choose, you can step out of your comfort zone and explore new genres and styles. Here are a couple of reading challenges to start or join.

Book bingo is very self-explanatory; you just print or find some way to keep track of it. You could do a blackout and complete all the books on the bingo board, or you could do classic 5 in a row. Another challenge you could try is an A-Z challenge, where you read 26 books with each title starting with a different letter of the alphabet. You can take these challenges at your own pace.
