10 Bookish Habits I Don't Think are that Bad.

1. Annotating your books

I personally loooove doing this! It shows your thoughts and how you felt while reading the book. I think it’s super cool to look back on your younger self’s thoughts on a book you loved at the time.

I don’t worry about highlighting my favorite quotes the first time I read them, but if I really like the book, I’ll go back and reread it to highlight and tab my favorite quotes or scenes.

Some people think this ruins the book, but honestly, I think it gives it character. It’s also your book. You’re allowed to do whatever you want with it, despite what anyone else thinks.

2. DNFing

If you’re not feeling a book, that’s totally okay!! You may want to come back to it later if you have nothing to read or if you want to try something new. And if you don’t, that's fine too.

You never want to force yourself to read a book. When you add pressure to reading, it's not fun. It becomes stressful and draining. Reading isn’t a chore; it's a hobby we do because we enjoy it. That's what puts us in reading slumps.

3. Sticking to one genre

I HATE it when people judge me for having a preference in the books I read. Just because you read one genre doesn’t mean you’re any less of a book lover than anyone else. You never have to force yourself to read a genre you’re not engrossed in. You read what you like, and I’ll read what I like.

Reading one genre makes it easier to recognize patterns, and it provides a comfy reading experience.  While expanding your reading taste is great, if you're not comfortable with that yet, then don't stress about it

4. Getting Defensive over Adaptations

It is NO secret that I hate movie adaptations. Some are good, and some are awful. I personally get upset if movies are exactly like the books. I know that’s not realistic, but I still feel protective of my favorite books when I hear a new adaptation is coming out.

I think as a book lover, it’s totally normal to get defensive about your favorite books. Your books provide a connection and imagination; movies don't. But I won’t go into detail because I did a whole post on this topic.

5. Reading multiple books at once

You may run into a couple of issues with this one, but let's say you’re reading one book for a book club and one book for your own enjoyment; that's totally fine! As long as you manage it well. Maybe set up specific days you read each book.

Some of the problems I run into while doing this are mixing up the plots, confusing the characters, and finishing the book slower than usual. But if you can manage it without getting them mixed up, go for it!

6. Looking up/ Spoiling the end

Save yourself the anxiety! I do this all the time. It may be a horrible habit, but as long as you still enjoy the book and it doesn't ruin it for you, who cares??

You’re still reading the whole book and not just looking up the end to throw the book away. Some elements may be missing, like the thrill or shock, but if you’re an anxious person like me, you may not enjoy those elements. And that's perfectly fine!

7. Starting a series and not finishing it

There’s no use in forcing yourself to finish a series just because you bought the first one. I remember a couple of years ago, I started the Harry Potter series, and by the third book, I was bored. I'm not saying I won’t ever try it again, but I’m not going to force myself to finish a series in misery.

To avoid wasting money, you could always get the first book from the library and see if you like the storyline and characters of the book. If you like that book, you can consider buying the whole series!

8. Judging a book by it's cover

Okay, trust me on this one. The covers are made to reflect the genre, vibe, and tone of the book. It really sets the stage and setting of your book. So if the cover shows something you definitely wouldn't want to read about, don’t feel judged and get the book anyway.

I do think you should always read the summary, but if the cover doesn’t show something you're interested in, then don't get it! You probably will end up DNFing it or not starting it at all.

    9. Piling on to TBR (maybe...)

Now I can see both sides to this argument. On one hand, this can make you overwhelmed. You may start to rush to finish instead of appreciating the book you’re currently reading, especially if you're a slow reader.

Buttttt on the other hand, if you find a super good deal on a book you find intriguing, BUY IT. You can read it anytime you like. You may not get a good deal like that again, so you might as well! And until then, it can sit there and look pretty on your stuffed bookshelf.

      10. Your favorite book being popular

I'm not sure if this is considered a “bad habit,” but I know most people look down on people whose favorite book is a popular book. Or if someone only reads popular books.

They’re favored for a reason! They’re popular because they are well-written and often have a great plot. Now, I do think it’s beneficial to expand your taste in books or genres. You never know if you don’t try.

At the end of the day, there’s no “right way” to read. It’s your hobby, you do whatever makes you happy!
