I know all my book girlies have had that time when you feel absolutely no motivation to read anything. I like to call it "book burnout." Trust me, girl, we've all been there.
Maybe you're too busy, or maybe you're just bored with reading. Maybe you're even procrastinating finishing that one book you've been reading for a month. "Oh, I'll finish it next week when my schedule is clearer." Yeah right.
Don't worry. I got some tips for you that helped me personally get out of a reading drought.
1. Reread your favorite book
This is always the first thing I try when I enter a reading slump. Rereading an old favorite always motivates me to find more books that are better than that one. I can't tell you how many times I've reread Twilight to get out of that slump (Team Edward, by the way).
This works because it reignites your passion for reading and brings back old feelings and nostalgia from reading the book. You don't even have to stress about finishing it because you already know what happens.
2. One page per notification
This little trick is a great way to force yourself to read. Every time you receive a notification, such as a text message or your 3oth Duolingo reminder, force yourself to read a page. Or if you're like me and receive no notifications, you can read one chapter per notification.
While it's definitely annoying at first, one chapter may be all it takes to jumpstart your interest back in the book. If not, you can at least feel accomplished that you finished one chapter.
3. Join a book club
Book clubs are a fantastic way to get connected with other book lovers. You can share your favorite books, give book recommendations, and have friendly discussions with friends or strangers.
This way, you have buddies who can encourage and help you through that reading slump, and if none of your friends are readers, don't you worry! There are plenty of online book clubs for you to join!
I find this sooo much fun! It's a great way to hold yourself accountable and hang out with some friends while you're at it. Gather some friends, agree on a book, and find a cozy place to meet up and talk about it!
4. Visit a bookstore/library
I don't know about you, but every time I go to the bookstore, I end up feeling like I'm in Wonka’s factory. I just want to read EVERYTHING. I find books I forgot I wanted to read.
If you don't like the pressure of buying a book, you could always visit the library. That way, you don’t have to force yourself to finish a book you truly don’t like. It’s also nice to sit down in the library and take your time pre-reading the book.
5. Try a new genre
If you’re constantly feeling disinterested in your “favorite” genre, possibly it’s time you switch things up. Each genre has unique writing styles, themes, and plot structures. Expand your perspective by going out of your comfort zone.
If you’re used to sweet romances, maybe try mysteries. Or if you're into fantasy, try a thriller. Explore your options, and maybe you’ll find a new favorite genre you won’t get bored with.
6. Romantise your reading
If you’re just bored with reading, try changing up the atmosphere. Set up your inside environment with candles, the thickest blanket you have, and of course, a cup of hot tea or coffee.
Romanticizing will help uplift your mood. It will relax and slow you down in the busyness of life. You can even listen to calming music or instruments as long as it doesn’t distract you.
Take FULL advantage of the weather. If it's bright and sunny, maybe read a beach or vacation setting book. Something that you would read while tanning. If it's gloomy and rainy, go for a cozy read. Like a mystery or a moody romance.
7. Dont feel pressured!
And my final tip, don't stress about it! Feel free to take a break if you're not enjoying it anymore. Reading is all about relaxing and feeling like you're in the story. It's no fun if you're dreading picking up a book. Pressure always leads to burnout, so don't force it! Eventually, the boredom will go away, and the excitement will come back.
