Books vs. Movie Adaptations

Why people say "The book was better"

Lack of Emotional Connection

Movies will never have the same emotional connection to people as books. Movies don’t have time for details like the character's inner thoughts, backstory, and subplots that add to the book's story.  A quote from Whimsyread.com says, “When you're reading, you live through the characters' struggles, victories, and heartbreaks page by page. You see what they're thinking and feeling in ways movies never really show.” Due to this lack of perspective in movies, it’s hard to relate to and feel with the character. One of the many reasons people love books is that they offer perspective and connection; they make us feel like we are the main character.

Limited Creative Freedom

Movies limit your creative freedom and disappoint your imagination. You spend time imagining a character and creating their own voice, personality, and style, so it’s upsetting to see a cast that is nothing like you pictured. A quote from The Teen Mag explains this perfectly: “Readers spend years imagining their own identities, idiosyncrasies, and chemistry. So when a studio picks a cast that feels very wrong, it isn't just nitpicky - it's emotional whiplash.” Everyone perceives things differently, so when you're watching someone else’s interpretation of a book, it will always disappoint your imagination. In books, you have the freedom to be creative and interpret things in a way that resonates with you.

Power Of Nostalgia

Book-to-movie adaptation ruins the nostalgia created over time. When you're watching someone else's idea of how the story went, you ruin the bond created over time while reading. “When an adaptation alters key plots or changes character personalities, it risks erasing the comfort those memories bring.” -readerscloset.com Readers often feel protective of their favorite books and will be upset if it doesn’t bring those feelings to life. Movies only have a limited time to recreate emotions that took more time to build.
